Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death, the Ford family was managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. Her classmate included Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime, she had already made her debut on television in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. But Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
